MATT LEECH ON MYSPACE // MATT LEECH IN THE FUNNY/NOT FUNNY STORE

Matt Leech - 7"

“…Matt Leech recorded five songs of creative energy amounting to the “Empty House” EP. Shaving off the complex time signatures from the song structures employed in his now defunct band The Alphabet, Leech streamlines his workflow to pack all the intensity of an Alphabet song into mercurial catchy pop jams. What this man can do on GarageBand in a day outshines what most can do within a month. And it will be catchier than your song and will influence more kittens* than you.” -Jeff Byers, Leadbellies

Matt Leech sent me over  the title track from his upcoming 7” onFunny / Not Funny RecordsEmpty House yesterday and I’ve been really digging it. It’s full of fuzzy feel good garage vibes, reverb drenched vocal whine and some pretty stellar synth bits. Can’t wait for this vinyl. Empty House is out this July in a limited pressing of 300, so keep your eyes peeled. You can also pick up Matt’s cassette Sink for free over at the Funny / Not Funny shop.” -White Guys With Beards

Matt Leech hails from Harrisonburg, Virginia. His music is shimmering and full of echoes. You can feel yourself floating while listening. What does one do in Harrisonburg, Virginia? Besides try and stay cool, probably make hazy music and drink beers with friends while pondering what the hell is going on outside the bubble. This is not to put anyone down, but we all know that music that comes from a place without much, for lack of a better word, “culture,” is earthy, textured and made with survival in mind.Harrisonburg is right by the Shenandoah National Forest, however. And that must be pretty fucking nice. I’m a country mouse at heart. Leech has a 7″ out on Funny/Not Funny and here’s a track off of it, “Empty House.” Following in the vein of other reverb-heavy artists, Leech distinguishes himself. The melody is particularly catchy here, and many of his songs are just as enchanting. Easy listening, folks.” -Microphone Memory Emotion

“This tidy little number just graced my inbox. This is Empty House by Matt Leech which is the single from his new “7 Empty House (Bet you didn’t see that coming) which is getting released through Funny Not Funny Records. I love the breakdown about 1.25 in. Refreshingly addictive.” - Masses/Masses

“Empty House is a track from Matt Leechs’ upcoming 7” limited to just 300 copies onFunny/Not Funny Records. It’s full of fuzz and reverb which equates to a pretty sweet poppy garage track. ” - Salad Fork

“Funny/Not Funny Records head honcho Matt Leech has sent over the title track of his upcoming “Empty House EP” 7 inch out on what else but Funny/Not Funny Records. It is nice distorted lo-fi pop tune with epic guitars and sweet unartificial synth lines and a voice that sounds like Dylan from Cloud Nothings on helium. Seriously very excited for this seven inch. Anyone who loves this track like I do can pick up Leech’s messed up Sink cassette for free over at Funny/Not Funny Records right here.” - Creative Intersection

Nice write up for the Invisible Hand / The Alphabet 7”

The Alphabet/Hand 7"

“Somewhere on either side of Mount Afton, Virginia, the best bands you haven’t heard yet are warming up their tube amps and plugging in their weathered Stratocasters in cramped, dingy basements.
Harrisonburg, Va.-based Funny / Not Funny Records crystallizes this moment by pairing together the Shenandoah Valley sounds of Charlottesville’s The Invisible Hand and Harrisonburg’s The Alphabet.

Punchy, hook-loaded guitar lines that sway and swell introduce The Alphabet on “Repeat.” Matt Leech’s lolcat-like voice keeps the tempo on music that draws on the indie sensibilities laid down in the 90s by Braid and Hot Rod Circuit. The Alphabet brings a rawer sound to the genre hinting at the band’s ability to cause some cerebral damage. As fierce as a cougar and as raucous as two old skool Sparks, “Repeat,” recorded by Ben Schlabach (Mild Winter), is sure to blow some speakers and twist some heads.

The Invisible Hand musically evokes The Zombies pop songwriting abilities with about 5mg of Adderol. Adam Smith, on this release, shows a more intimate Hand and briefly sheds the full band for a home-recording offering that isn’t trying to fit into an exhausting “skate or die” revival. “Death Bellows 45” triumphantly ends up sounding like a catchy, fucked-up “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” B-side tucked away in an attic; discovered and covered by a pensive Daniel Johnston performing solely to old Muscle Men figurines.”
