Please welcome Phil Kim of Hooking Up. If you live in Harrisonburg or are an avid reader of this blog then this man needs no introduction but for those who are unfamiliar, he is the mastermind behind the catchy garage punk tunes the band heralds. Pick up a copy of their self released demo tape in our distro or check out a live song we featured in an earlier post. Still not enough? Catch the band at their next show:

Speaking of MACRoCk, Phil Kim is on the MACRoCk Committee that helps put together the Mid Atlantic College Radio Conference that will be held on April 1st and 2nd. Here is what Phil had to say about MACRoCk:
“It’s a music conference that happens the first weekend of every April. This is the 14th year running. Focuses on promoting and showcasing independent artists without corporate sponsorship. Pretty cool stuff. Oh and tickets are embarrassingly cheap.”

And finally and most importantly we asked Phil Kim to put together his top picks for bands playing MACRoCk in our next installment of the artist mix tape series. Enjoy this nine song preview of what is to come:
1. Tiger Tail - The Brightest
My number one gotta see is Tiger Tail. We’ve played with them a couple of times. These dudes (and girl) rule so hard, but are some of the nicest people. It’s 90’s inspired emo-punk. Real good shit. Their singer is probably my favorite front man to watch right now.
2. Pujol - Too Safe
Really diggin’ Pujol as well. I think Jack White produced this song. He’s got catchy riffs and the vocals are unique. Plus dude has swag.
3. Screaming Females - I Don’t Mind It
Screaming Females played Harrisonburg only once before at an XJM show barely anyone went to. Unfortunately, they killed it and a lot of people missed it. It was like they didn’t give mind if anyone was there or not. Marissa is like the female Buckethead, except better.
4. Heavy Cream - Watusi
Heavy Cream is also a must see. I’ve seen them a couple of times, and we got to open for them. They have such an aggressive style, it’s so crazy. Part of the Nashville punk rock uprising. Nashville is killin’ it right now.
5. Slow Animal - Sitting Here
I’m diggin’ this band’s sound though I know nothing about them. Hopefully, they’ll be good live.
6. The House Floor - Tyrants!
The House Floor is really good as well. They keep getting better and better each time I’ve seen them play MACRoCk. They are all crazy good at their instruments and the songs are pretty unusual and have a lot of tempo changes. Plus, they are super nice.
7. The Eternal Summers - Pogo
The Eternal Summers have a nice and catchy sound. They are also really good live. Sometimes when I listen to them, I am actually tricked into thinking it is summertime drinking some soda out of glass bottles and eating some sunflower seeds.
8. Invisible Hand - There’s Room in my Will
These dudes are really fun to watch, and also have a really tight sound that only well-practiced/musically well-versed bands can pull off. I really dig their LP that came out recently.
9. Hold Tight! - Hey Peter
Really like this band and we finally played with them in Charlottesville last Sunday at a house show. These guys are so fun to watch live. They crush it. It’s the kind of pop-punk I grew up on a for a couple of years in middle school, but better and much wiser.
