Pictured above is the brand new line up for Uncle Bengine and the Restraining Orders at their first performance at the Blue Nile in Harrisonburg, VA. F/NF recently released a new split cassette for the band and their WV pals, Prison Book Club, which you can pick up from our store here. Adam Smith + MACRoCk Acoustic Showcase + Lurid Pictures

F/NF was honored to have Adam Smith put together an acoustic set to represent our label at this year’s MACRoCk Label Expo Acoustic Showcase. The featured song in the video above is entitled “Eating Out” and comes from an upcoming EP entitled Aja that we plan on releasing (more news on that soon!). The video was compiled our good friends and Harrisonburg natives, Lurid Pictures. We encourage you to check out their vimeo channel for other examples of their work. In a band? Need a video? This song is very special. Mind, body and soul music from a couple of cerebral gentleman.

2. Indian Queens - Nick Lowe
Can’t beat Nick Lowe when it comes to smart-ass, bad-ass neoclassic rock and roll. But this story song is amazingly timeless.

3. Up The Junction - Squeeze
Another story. Very smart, very heartbreaking. It’s a hit.

4. Do Like You - Stevie Wonder
A happier story. This one’ll make you tear up while you boogie.

5. The Morning Fog - Kate Bush
I’ve heard people dis this song as a fluffy copout at the end of the dark side of Hounds of Love. But the song itself is so pretty!

6. Johnny & Mary - Robert Palmer
I aspire to be my generation’s Robert Palmer. Or at least to dress more like him.

7. Dancing on My Own - Robyn
This is a beautiful beautiful song and that’s all there is to it.

8. Uncloudy Day - The Staple Singers
Best singing. Best harmony. Best sound. A great reminder that less can definitely be more. Way more.

THIS SATURDAY! which happens to Record Store Day and the same day as the Rocktown Beer and Music Festival, will also and most importantly be the Record Release Show for The Cinnamon Band’s brand new 7” on Funny / Not Funny Records. Everyone who purchases the record at the show will be entered in a contest to win a copy of the test press pictured below! Funny / Not Funny Record’s Monthly Mixtape installment this month is curated by F/NF co-founder Ben Schlabach. Inspiration for this mix comes from MACRoCk, a music festival that takes place in Harrisonburg VA every April. MACRoCk has been a staple in my life since I was around 16 years old. I have seen things change over the years but one thing that has never changed is the excitement of MACRoCk season. Planning my list of must see bands, catching up with old friends, maybe even making a new friend or two, it is one of my favorite weekends of the year!

Heavy Cream - Run Free
This band reminds me of mid summer house parties, maybe because I saw them for the first time at a mid summer house party, or maybe because I love jamming 3 chord ragers in the summer. None the less, they bring a fun live show, that is worth a watch. Friday 11:10pm - Downtown 34

Invisible Hand - Don’t Wait For Your Third Eye
If you have been to our website you clearly get the connection between us and the Hand, they have been apart of Funny / Not Funny since the beginning. I am very excited about seeing them at MACRoCk because they haven’t played Harrisonburg in a number of months, and I need a fix. Friday 10:20pm - Clementine Cafe

Juston Stens - Edge of the Moon
I haven’t seen Juston before, I did catch his old band, Dr. Dog, do a set at a festival three or four years ago. The tunes I have jammed thus far make me believe he should put on a good show. It is also awesome to catch a set at Court Square Theater, AC + Comfy Chairs make for a nice break from running crazy from showcase to showcase. Saturday 5:30pm - Court Square Theater

Oldermost - Lose Your Mind
Ex Harrisonburg dudes, now living in Philly. Always entertaining, nice upbeat folk pop! I haven’t seen them play since last MACRoCk so I am overdue on catching another one of their sets. Friday 6:10pm - Court Square Theater

Elephant Child - Morlocks
I am pretty sure every time I have made a mix for the Monthly Mix series I have included Elephant Child, and I am not ashamed of it because they continue to kill it over and over. My favorite part of this jam is the “yeeeeaahhhh” part at the end, it nevers gets old! Friday 6:20pm - Downtown 34

The Turlocks - Coaster Glasses
Harrisonburg’s newest super group, featuring members of the Super Vacations, The Alphabet, the Brooms, Uncle Bengine and the Restraining Orders. Algernon Cadwallader - Springing Leaks
They have been playing MACRoCk for the last few years and I for one am pumped they will be back again this year. They put on a great live show, catchy might be an understatement, but it is about all I can say…they are catchy, maybe even catchy as hell. Saturday 10:20pm - Downtown 34

Lizard Police - Why You Stompin’ Around?
In my quest to plan my schedule and research bands I came across Lizard Police. Based out of Tulsa OK, they bring a mix of punk and melodic hardcore, some songs sound angry, some poppy, all of them come off solid! F/NF 019: Prison Book Club / Uncle Bengine Split Cassette

This release has been in the works since late fall of last year, both bands have been hard at work writing and recording and we are thrilled to finally announce the release of F/NF 019. The pairing of Prison Book Club with Uncle Bengine and the Restraining Orders is the prefect soundtrack to a last call bar room conversation. Funny / Not Funny Records had an absolute blast at SXSW!

From the bottom of our hearts Funny / Not Funny records would like to thanks everyone who was involved with or attended our two showcases that went down at the Deco Lounge on Tuesday March 13th and Wednesday Marth 14 for SXSW. Specifically, we want mention our hard working bands Naked Gods, The Diamond Center, and Eternal Summers for making the trip down and performing, our showcase partner Jacob Wolfe from Holy Smokes Booking, our eccentric, amazing pro sound provider Bruce for keeping it weird as Austinites do. As you can tell from the photos above our showcases were chill vibes through and through. After a successful second year we are looking forward to the next SXSW already!

Purling Hiss - She Don’t Mind
What is it with cassette’s? Had some of their albums but it was not until I picked up a copy of Dizzy Polizzy that I fell in love with this band. Maybe it is because my car only has a tape deck? Maybe it is because we as a label put out cassettes? Maybe it is because tapes are just rad?

Creepoid - Staircase
Saw Creepoid last night. Hung out with them in Richmond this past Thursday. Not only do these cats put together some incredible tunes but they are a truly nice and fun gang to chill with. Picked up a copy of their LP that No Idea Records just repressed for them. Recommend you do so as well as the entire thing is filled with gems.

Black Mountain - Angels
First saw this band per recommendation from a friend in 2005 at MACRoCk and was blown away. One of the only bands that I ever saw in PC Ballroom whose sound was not completely destroyed by the room’s acoustics. Angels is a slow jammer from their sophomore album entitled In The Future.

The Diamond Center - Bells
This track has been stuck in my head ALL year! Nothing seems to be able to dislodge it. Good thing it just happens to be by my friends The Diamond Center who I have had the pleasure of seeing live numerous times this year already. Good thing it is on a 7” we are releasing this month which you can pre-order here. Good thing this band will be SXSW so I can continue to get my fix and hang out with these amazing people. Good. Good. Good. Just good.

Silver Pines - Time Father
Haunting jams from San Marcos, Texas which is a hop, skip, and a jump down the road from Austin. Fairly certain all the members of this band have moved on to other project and for what reason I do not know. First and best track of their LP entitled Forces. Do you own a copy? Can I buy it?

Pocahaunted - Touch You
Bethany from Best Coast’s old band, who has since continued on, picked up additional/replacement members, and put out the album entitled Make It Real. An album which is their latest, would be better named Make It Weird, and the home to the track listened above.

The 13th Floor Elevators - You’re Gonna Miss Me
CLASSIC. You know it, you love it, you boogie to it. So why not another spin?

Pow Wows - Seeing Black
Scuzzy garage tunes from four dudes in Toronto, Canada. Seeing Black is my jangly debaucherously fun favorite off their album entitled Nightmare Soda. With hints of The Monks, listening to this track makes me want to attend a garage soul dance night. Rumors are we might get one in town soon, stoked.

Three tracks of heavy hitting, fuzzed out, garage rock and roll from two of the most entertaining acts on the Interstate 81 corridor of the Virginias. This is a record of firsts; it marks the Demon Beat’s welcome to the Funny / Not Funny family, it marks the debut vinyl release from Elephant Child, and it marks the first time these long time friends have been paired together on one release.

The Cinnamon Band: Welcome to our family!

This Virginia-based guitar and drums duo consists ofJohn Harouff and Neil Campbell. I utilized the word “officially” above as the F/NF camp has always considered TCB a part of the family. These hometown heroes have been apart of countless local bands, too many to name. Some of our earliest memories of attending shows includes these two fine gentlemen on stage. The Diamond Center: Welcome to our family!

The very first interaction between F/NF and The Diamond Center proved to be a heartfelt beginning as the fact we were going to become great friends was undeniable. Ever since this band relocated to Richmond, VA, they have been accumulating fans and friends at an astonishing rate. After befriending our close friends over at the Magic Twig Community, The Diamond Center cruised on down the Mystic Fortress to record the two songs you will find on this upcoming 7”. This magical collective of kind folks currently consists of Lindsay Phillips, Tim Falen, Brandi Price, Kyle Harris, and sometimes with the help of Will Godwin. Demon Beat: Welcome to our family!

Funny / Not Funny Records is excited to welcome the Demon Beat into our family with the announcement of F/NF 016 a split 7” with Harrisonburg’s own Elephant Child. The Demon Beat has not only been working hard out on the road and in the studio, they have also been building a scene in their hometown of Shepherdstown WV that proudly emphasizes community and family. Their friendship with Elephant Child quickly turned into a friendship with F/NF and we are thrilled to welcome them to the family. Ty Segall - Goodbye Bread
Way more relaxed than his earlier stuff, but I kind of like that about it. Definitely more melody driven and focused. Can’t wait to play with him next month!
JEFF the Brotherhood - Bummer
We were lucky enough to open for these guys back in August. They are cool dudes and put on one of the best (and loudest) live shows around. This record is pretty stellar, probably my favorite record the past year.

The Tumblr love overflowth

Back in October we reported reaching over 2000 fans on tumblr. We here in the F/NF camp have been so busy putting together a string of new releases you for that we never noticed passing the 3000 mark. In fact, we are proud to announce that we have cruised past 4000 followers! We are humbled by all the interest from our readers and encourage you to spread the word. Monthly Mixtape: Rob Ulsh

Funny / Not Funny Records is back with the eighth installment of the reformatted Label Mixtape Series. If you missed the previous months head over to our 8tracks site where they are archived. This month the mix was put together by The Super Vacations front man Rob Ulsh. We recently picked up a few copies of their two new split 7” records for our distro, [w/ Ceiling Stares and w/ PC Worship] we highly encourage you to check them out if you haven’t. We also still have some copies of our latest release available, a split between The Super Vacations and Eternal Summers entitled Mystic Fortress Sessions Vol. 1. Pick up all three over at our store!

Track Information

1. Angelo Badalamenti - High School Swing
This is a song off of the Twin Peaks (Season Two) Soundtrack. I am a huge fan of Angelo Badalamenti, as he has collaborated on a lot of different things with David Lynch. This isn’t necessarily one of my favorite tracks from him, but it fit really well for an intro track. Everybody should do themselves a favor and check out his work on the Blue Velvet Soundtrack.
2. Fleetwood Mac - The Ledge
I think Tusk was one of the last records I heard from Fleetwood Mac. It took me quite a few listens to really appreciate it. I absolutely love the way that it is recorded. It has its own distinct sound and some of the stuff they did on this was pretty wacky. This song has a really strong energy and fun vibe.
3. Iggy Pop - Some Weird Sin
This comes off of the Lust For Life LP. Most of the songs are done with David Bowie and have his sound and style all over them. I like to jam this song really loud in my apartment and clap along.
4. Television - Venus
I picked up their cd from the public library and have been a fan ever since.
5. Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti - Fright Night
Long time listener of this dudes music. It made me realize that production, tuning, etc. isn’t even necessary to write a great pop song.
6. Buzzcocks - Whatever Happened To ?
After listening to this song, I began thinking that I should have just done a mix with all of my favorite punk bands on it. This song will just have to do.
7. PC Worship -
I don’t even know how this song ended up on my computer. Is this song on a proper release? Its always nice to see an artist/band not make the same record over and over. If you listen to the new PC Worship stuff, its pretty clear that its a continually growing endeavor.
8. Sonic Youth - Jams Run Free
My favorite Sonic Youth songs are the ones that are sung by Kim.
