Monthly Mixtape: Harper Holsinger + Whatever Brains Sale!

Harper

Funny / Not Funny Records is proud to announce the fifth installment of the reformatted Label Mixtape Series. If you missed the previous months head over to our 8tracks site where they are archived and will be available long after the download links expire. Like in the name, 8tracks only allows you to upload 8 tracks at a time and this month the mix comes from Co-Label Founder, Stu Cook Impersonator, Drinker of beers, Harper Holsinger. His motivation for this month comes from the Whatever Brains Sale described below.  Enjoy!

Track Information:

1. The Intelligence - Like Like Like Like Like Like Like
If you were unsure whether or not you were going to like this mix or not, these boys, hailing from CA and members of the A-Frames, will sure drive it home with the very straight forward chorus hook. Like? I do.

2. Country Teasers - Black Change
Country Teasers, a
nother In The Red Records outfit like the band above, is disgusting, discordant, repetitive noise yet is totally infectious and skillfully crafted.  If Satan was in a country band, this would be it.

3. Whatever Brains- What Makes A Man make “What Makes A Man Start Fires?”
Whatever Brains, Funny / Not Funny Records recording artist and the inspiration behind this mix, expose you their own brand of cross-genre creations that are equally catchy and evil. Their recordings are amazing and their live set even better.  Invite them to your town and you will find out.  Just don’t challenge them to Dr. Mario.

4. Audacity - Power Drowning
I love and hate this band. These kids were writing better songs at the age of 14 than I could ever hope to do so. This track is my favorite off their LP.  Listen and understand my feelings.

5. Double Negative - Hospitality
Double Negative are essential punk jammers hailing from North Carolina that display raw energy with each release they throw out. This track is my favorite off their last LP put out by our buds at Sorry State Records. Dig it.

6. Mayyors - Ghost Punch
Brutal. Fast. Unstoppable. Noise. Practically impossible to find records. Led by Chris Woodhouse who has recorded and produced some crucial tunes including for this mix’s opener, The Intelligence, which he later joined as a permanent member.

7. Balaclavas - Roman Holiday
Menacingly dark post punk from Texas who utilize bass, synths, distorted guitars, and other odds and ends to create some really ominous vibes. Title track of their LP.

8. PC Worship Mutant Soul Band - Wake Up in the Dark and There’s Nothing Going On
Fuzzed Out Pysch? Drug Influenced Jams? Fucked Up Free Jazz? General Mayhem? Yes and so, so much more! PC Worship is the product of musical genius and friend Justin Frye and his collaborators the Mutant Soul Band. Track is found on a must have 7” entitled Live Reduxion and is the perfect closer for this mix.
