Monthly Mixtape: Harper Holsinger

Funny / Not Funny Record’s Monthly Mixtape installment this month is curated by F/NF co-owner, Harper Holsinger. Tunes were selected in celebration of our 20th release, an EP/LP by Borrowed Beams of Light entitled “Hot Springs”. We hope you enjoy this mind melting mix.
1. 108 Battles (of the Mind) - Kula Shaker
This song is wild. The 90s were wild. Too bad their rest of their catalog isn’t. The 90’s were full of one hit wonders I guess… but what do I know, guess I should just ‘Hush’ up.
2. Where Did She Go - The Sufis
Newcomers from Nashville that all you Young Sinclairs heads should be keeping tabs on. Wish they would go on tour already, VA is just next door, come guys. Burger Records just recently announced they were releasing a cassette full of their tasty psych jams. Recommend picking it up if its not sold out already.
3. Define A Transparent Dream - The Olivia Tremor Control
Classic. Found out about this band because they played MACRoCk back in 99. Too bad I missed it. Too bad I didn’t I have car then. Too bad I only had a learner’s permit. Had all three of those wishes played out the opposite… now that would have been dreamy.
4. The State - Destroyer
Who isn’t in love with Daniel Bejar’s voice? Canada certainly is. Dude was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize. Lost to Arcade Fire tho. Robbery I say. This track is a older jammer.
5. Wing Stroke - Borrowed Beams of Light
BEAMS! This band sounds like all the bands in this mix if they were put into a blender and served up cold complete with a little umbrella. Sound enticing? Telling you, you need this EP/LP.
6. Needles In The Camel’s Eye - Elf Power
Elf Power is great. Had the pleasure of booking these guys in the past. Wish I was close enough to hang out on their super amazing elephant six collective farm. That would be rad right? Also, this is a Brian Eno cover. I like it better than the original. Don’t agree? Sue me.
7. Well Wired - Daughters of Albion
Relatively unknown pop psych duo from the 60’s. There is SO much going on in this song. I swear that is a French Horn. Wish I could have seen the 60’s. Wonder what the state of progress is on time travel? Guess we will all have to settle for regular hot tubs for the time being.
8. I Talk to the Wind - King Crimson
King Crimson?! Oh man this one is going to be wild! SIKE. The follow-up track to 21st Century Schizoid Man. Anyone would need to chill out after that banger. Seemed fitting to implement the same idea here. So mellow out to this mix closer.
